Jessica Applegate won gold and broke a world record in the pool
World Record Falls at Sainsbury's UK School Games
Records were the order of day three at the 2011 Sainsbury's UK School Games but it was the surprise world mark in the pool at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre that wowed the crowds as swimmer Jessica Applegate had the race of her life to claim the gold medal and break a world record in the process.
The England East swimmer won the MD 50m freestyle in 28.90 seconds which meant, with the record due to be ratified, that she ducked under the previous mark by 0.05 seconds to leave the crowd in amazement.
Meanwhile, at Don Valley, Kelvin Tairou was the star of the show as the athletics kicked into action and the Londoner re-wrote the record books as he stormed to 100m gold.
The 16-year-old headed to the athletics stadium full of confidence after lowering his personal best to 10.70 seconds in claiming the English Under-17 title last month in Bedford.
But the teenager blew that out of the water as he went faster still, smashing the championship record as he crossed the line in 10.54 seconds.
And after securing an astonishing gold in his first Sainsbury's UK School Games outing, Tairou admitted he surprised even himself at just how fast he went.
"That was amazing because the time was unbelievable to be honest," Tairou said, finishing ahead of Bristol's Adam Thomas in second and Scotland's Sam Revie in third.
"That sort of time was what I was looking to eventually be running next year so to have it so early and this year already is brilliant.
"I came to the UK School Games just looking to run a good race and I never expected to run the time like I did. This means I can come back next season and try to go faster still and it has given me a lot of confidence to do just that.
"This race was the end of the season for me and what a way to finish."
Meanwhile, London claimed gold in the 4x300m girls before Birmingham stormed to victory in the 4x100m boys to round off the first day of action at Don Valley Stadium.
Day three saw some breath-taking sport across Sheffield and at the pool Applegate, aged 15, from Great Yarmouth, was stunned with her world record-breaking performance:
"That was a great race and the highlight of my time here at the UK School Games having set a new world record, I'm thrilled. The race just went to plan and I've trained hard for this and to set such a fast time is great."
The swimming event also saw Caleb Hughes set a new championship record in winning the 1,500m freestyle in 15:54.19 minutes, while Nicole Lough followed suit in the MD 100m breaststroke.
There were also new Games records for Danielle Lowe in the 100m butterfly, Alex Dunk in the 200m freestyle and Camilla Hattersley in the 400m IM.
Despite not setting a new best, Oliver Leonard visited the top step of the podium twice as he claimed victories in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly, leaving him to toast a job well done.
"To come away with two gold medals in one morning was completely unexpected as I usually have a problem with stamina when I double up in events," he said.
"I always go all out in any race and I was really excited about winning the 100m butterfly and it set me up to start well in the 50m freestyle.
"But I never imagined I'd be winning gold in both events."
Elsewhere, Gabby Down claimed gold in the wheelchair foil fencing and Joe Fraser claimed the all-around boys title in the gymnastics as we head into the final day of action in Sheffield.
