Sean Vendy and Brodie Miller with their Badminton gold medals
Gold Rush Brings 2011 Sainsbury's UK School Games to a Close
Sean Vendy admitted he had to pinch himself after he swept the badminton board to bring the curtain down on the 2011 Sainsbury's UK School Games.
The 15-year-old was never far away from the podium at the English Institute of Sport - Sheffield on Sunday, getting the ball rolling by beating Scotland's Josh Neil in the boys singles final.
But he wasn't done there, returning to the court alongside Ben Lane to win the boys double, before rounding off a great weekend with victory in the mixed doubles alongside Brodie Miller.
And despite claiming the hat-trick, Vendy insists he is far from done with the competitions coming thick and fast.
"I'm pretty speechless to be honest," he said. "I came here not expecting anything really being a year younger than most other players.
"I just wanted to play well and do the best that I could and see what happens. I didn't expect three golds at all.
"Next weekend I've got an English U17 tournament in Milton Keynes, I'm not expecting anything in that but we'll see what happens - especially after this great result.
"I think this competition is amazing with all the courts and umpires, they do such a good job here in Sheffield, you don't get it everywhere but it gives you a real insight into what it would be like further up.
"The atmosphere is good too even if it's a bit shocking at the start but you get used to it after a while.
"A medal at the Olympics is my highest ambition. I want to be a professional badminton player, but we'll see what happens, although this does give me a lot of confidence."
Meanwhile, Wales' Angel Romaeo warmed up for this week's Commonwealth Youth Games in style as she was a familiar sight on the gymnastics podium.
The 14-year-old got off to the perfect start at iceSheffield as she pipped fellow Welsh gymnasts Raer Theaker and Kiera Brennan to win gold in the girls all-around thanks to a points haul of 52.200 on Saturday.
This was more than enough to put Wales on top of the team event but Romaeo was far from done, claiming victory in the beam and floor as well as winning silver in the asymmetric bars.
And Romaeo admitted she is now licking her lips for her trip to the Isle of Man.
"It feels really great to be UK School Games champion," she said. "I worked really hard and it's just great to win.
"I've been here before but this time was better because I just hit my routines as well as I can do and did really well in all my individual finals too so I am really proud of myself.
"The Youth Commonwealths are next weekend so we're straight from here to there. This was a bit of a build up to that.
"I think I can improve in the future by doing my routines a lot tighter, trying to be as clean as possible and getting the difficulty value up as well and I will be looking to do that on the Isle of Man."
Elsewhere, England claimed the hockey title, England South and England Central won the boys' and girls' volleyball respectively, while Wales won the first ever Sainsbury's UK School Games rugby sevens competition, and England Central repeated the feat in the wheelchair basketball.
