An encouraging word from Olympic gold medallist, Jason Gardener
By Young reporters: Ashley Stewart and Megan Barlow
On Thursday 1st September, there was a wheelchair basketball demonstration in the Active Kids Village and we had the pleasure of meeting Olympic gold medal winning sprinter, Jason Gardener, who shared his views on the event.
Jason first supported the Games, as an ambassador in 2007, when they were held in Coventry. Since then, he's gone on to be an inspirational mentor and role model to the young athletes taking part in the multi sport event. We asked Jason what advice he would give to young athletes and his response gave a clear message that young athletes should develop a passion for their sport.
"Dream big and go for it", he told us, "winning the gold medal at the Olympics in 2004 was a dream come true and truly a remarkable experience." Jason also highlighted that in his opinion, the best part of the Games is that it gives young athletes a chance to represent their country or regional team, giving them a realistic view as to whether they are good enough to go all the way.
He ended the interview with an inspirational message for young athletes: "Use your disappointment to grow and develop your skills and come back better and stronger."
