Athlete mentor Kate Howey carries Craig Heap in opening ceremony
When I first heard about the Games, I had no idea how much work and effort had been put into organising the spectacular event, taking place in the magnificent sporting facilities across Sheffield.
Last week, I went behind the scenes at the Athletes Village to look into how much work and support was on offer from mentors, former athletes, officials and volunteers to ensure events ran smoothly.
I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the athlete mentors, Kate Howey. Kate has been involved in the Games since they began in 2006 as a Judo mentor. Having been to the Olympics herself, Kate is able to give the athletes an insight into the way things are done and share her experiences with the budding stars.
A lot of organisation has been needed to ensure that the young athletes arrive safely, get to certain events on time and have all of the necessities needed. At the Village, the Youth Sport Trust's, Sean Dowling was there to ensure everything was running well and took us on a tour of the village. His role was to ensure the village was working efficiently and that the athletes, team managers and coaches had everything they needed in preparation for competition.
