Spotlight on... Badminton
The Badminton squads for the first ever Sainsbury's 2012 School Games have now been announced.
48 of the country's most promising badminton players have been selected to compete in the event which takes place in May 2012 at Olympic venues. The badminton competition will take place at the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands where during the Olympic and Paralympic Games its five arenas will host a range of sports.
Athletes will this year compete for four teams: England, Ulster, Scotland and Wales.
We spoke to Matt Clare (15) who has been selected to represent England at the Sainsbury's 2012 School Games to find out what he is most looking forward to about competing at an Olympic venue. He said:
"I'm really thrilled to get confirmation of selection. I have played in lots of badminton tournaments over the last few years, in many countries, but this one will be much more than just about the competition. The whole experience of this year's Olympic venues, and being part of the occasion, makes this selection extra special.
"I would love a medal, but it will be tough. England has selected a team that is two years younger than many of our opponents, and that counts for quite a lot at this stage in our development. I honestly believe we have a chance though, if the draw is kind, and we perform to the levels I know we are capable of. Beyond the competition, I just want to savour the experience and interact with top athletes from all the other sports."
