The hockey competitions at Old Loughtonians got the Sainsbury's 2012 School Games off to a flying start today.
England Tigers star, Hannah Martin grabbed a dramatic late equaliser as the spoils were shared between the two England hockey sides, the Pumas and the Tigers, at the Sainsbury's 2012 School Games this afternoon.
Lily Elliot put the Tigers ahead but the England Pumas hit back with two quick goals thanks to Lily Owsley and Rebecca van Berkel's penalty corner.
Martin ensured a 2-2 draw at the death however and Tigers midfielder Madeleine Sharpe from Nottingham was delighted to avoid defeat to some familiar opponents: "The Tigers and the Pumas are the same team, just split into two, so there was a bit of an extra edge to this match because we were playing against friends we've known for a while," she said.
"I think all of us wanted to hold the bragging rights at the end and that's why we were celebrating so much when we equalised."
In the other match of the day, Ulster beat Wales 3-0 and took a big step towards victory in East London with all four teams playing each other once and the trophy going to whoever has most points.
Ulster came out of the blocks strongly and scored straight away through Dawn Axon after the interval.
Axon was again the star five minutes later after converting a penalty flick, which she had earned after seeing an effort blocked on the line following a dazzling solo run. Ulster finished the job when Katie Mullen smashed the ball home from the edge of the circle to record a comprehensive victory.
The athletes now enjoy a welcome dinner at the ExCeL this evening with all the rest of the action getting underway tomorrow before heading over to the Olympic Park on Wednesday 9th May.
